Located adjacent to ancient relics such as the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Arch of Constantine, the site is a prime opportunity for a new museum that will house many exciting programs. West of the site is where most tourist movement occurs, whereas the east opens up to quieter neighbourhood streets. The aim of the project is to join both demographics of tourists and locals, through the use of walkways, piazzas, and the new museum.
What makes the building unique is that it embraces and showcases the ancient retaining wall along the end of the site, allowing visitors to examine the beautiful wall up close and at various elevations. The site consists of a buffer that separates the busy activity of the surrounding context from the museum, which partially hides amongst the trees and yet creates its presence as a landmark through a tall stone tower. The tower itself acts as a vantage point for visitors to lookout onto the various monuments.
