La Chaise

La chaise is a folding chair inspired by Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte.
The concept is a simple, flat panel that reveals the shape of an ornate chair when unfolded. The design incorporates common themes from Magritte’s paintings by using juxtaposition and negative space to frame the body when one is seated. Inscribed onto the back of the seat are the words “La chaise” in Magritte’s iconic font, referencing his experimentation with word/images.
The chair is constructed out of Baltic Birch plywood panels using simple hand tools. The three main components are held together by long steel rods which serve as hinges for the folding chair. Small magnets embedded along the edges help keep the chair flat when carrying it around.
